20th Century Conflict

The village saw plenty of activity during both World Wars and at least 27 residents were killed in the fighting.  In addition to the exodus of so many young men as combatants or Bevin Boys, there was an influx of evacuees, land girls and those employed at local military establishments such as Halton Camp/RAF Halton.

During the Cold War, the village was host to a Royal Observer Monitoring Post, starting in 1953, when the Stone Post was relocated to Weston Turville. The above ground post was supplemented with an underground Post from 1959 to 1968.
